"You don't fee lit anymore because you're numb!" I laugh out as I watch Toni take a running leap into the water. When it splashes me I yelp! "Toni!" I groan good-naturedly before taking my own running leap into the water just so I can splash her back!
-
*Giggles an splashes mommy back*
"It's acos im part mermaid! An its only cold for a minute after that u dun feel it no mores u jus gotta jump in quick! Like this!"
Scrambles up onto the bank besides mommy and takin a few steps back i runs an JUMPSSSSS into the deep part of the water with a big SPLASHHHH!*
-
When Toni insists I laugh lightly with a big grin and start taking my shoes and socks off. "well, okay. You win," I tell her as I make my way over and dip a toe in the water, sending a light splash of it toward Toni.
"It's cold! I don't know how you stand it!"
-
*Wrinkles my nose when Mommy says she can't come in acos she dont got her swimsuit*
"You dun needa swimsuit to swim in the burn Mommy! You can jus swim in your clothes!"
-
Toni says that I should come too and I hesitate for a little bit. "I don't have my swimsuit, silly girl!" I call out with a laugh. Kids can get away with some things that adults can't!
-
"Mommy you should come in too! The waters fun!"
*Ducking under the water i dive down till i can touch the bottom of the pool, then see if i can swim all across it under the water*
-
Watches you and laughs. "You're going to be tired when you get home!" I call out happily, glad you're having a good time.
-
*Giggles and swims towards the small waterfall that provides a natural slide at the top end of the pool, scrambling barefoot over the rocks ill i reach the top, then launching myself down, coming up spluttering and laughing when i hit the pool, before running back up to do it all again*
-
I laugh at Toni's joke and answer, "ha! If your insides freeze you won't be going anywhere!"
-
*wrinkles my nose and looks over at mommy when she says if i stay in the water too long my insides will freeze, trying ta figure out iffn she bein for real or not, smilin as a thought comes to me*
"Hey mommy, iffn myinsides freezes does that mean i dun hafta goes to school?"
-
I chuckle as Toni immediately strips down and dives into the water, as an afterthought thinking about how cold the water must be and wincing some for her. But as she comes up, I don't see any signs that she particularly minds. Still, there is such a thing as hypothermia.
"Now, you're not going to be able to be in there for too long or your insides'll freeze," I tell her. I'm not trying to scare her but I'm equally unsure of how true that is. Still, better safe than sorry.
-
*Bounces up hearing mommy and quickly strips down to my sleepshorts that i still had on under my clothes, running quickly to the bank and diving into the deep pool the burn made at this spot, coming up gasping from the icy water, laughing as 2 furry missiles shoot into the water after me
-
It doesn't take me very long to reach the burn, and I look around for Toni. "Okay, I'm here," I call out as I spot the cave and go over to it. "Hey, you. You can go for a swim, now."
-
*Glancing down at Mommys text as my phone goes off again i hurriedly pull my feet from where they had been dangling in the water and head on back to the cave, quickly pulling out my kindle and a couple cookies and settle in to wait for mommy*
-
Seeing the text back I chuckle and reply,
Okay, I'll be down in a few minutes. But if you touch one toe in that water before I get there young lady you won't like what happens!
And with that I start to write a note to the other girls while waiting for the coffee to finish brewing:
Girls,
I'm headed down to the burn to let Toni swim for a little bit. There's plenty of cereal for breakfast. Feel free to come down and meet us when you're through.
Love,
Momma
Once the coffee has finished brewing I put it in a travel mug and grab my purse to head down there.
-
*Glancing down at Mommys text i grin and fire back a reply*
You come mommy pleaseeeeeee! - and hurryyyyy!
-
Seeing her text I shake my head with a small chuckle and fire back.
Not a chance, but nice try. Which will it be?
-
*shakes my head, seeing nantys text, not altogether surprisedby her response and quickly fires a text back*
I'm not alone mommy! I have nala and belle with me, theyre people!
Pretty sure as i send it the response will still be no but hey, dont try dont get!
-
It doesn't take very long for me to get a text back and I smile when I see that she's calling me 'Mommy'.
I love you, too, Sweetheart. And you know the rule about swimming--you shouldn't alone. Either you can call Jazzy and ask her to go down where you are or I can come meet you as soon as my coffee is finished brewing.
-
*Jumps slightly as my phone goes off, having been daydreaming staring at the sky! Quickly pulling it out my pocket iglance down and see a text from mommy. Quickly i fire one back.
Morning Mommy! everythings fine i just couldnt sleep an needed to be outside! Can i go swimming?ill be carefull! Love you!
-
When I wake up it's midmorning and I get out of bed, slightly surprised that someone hasn't come to get me. I get dressed in a pair of yoga pants and a long cotton blouse, brushing my hair lightly.
Heading downstairs I start my coffee and, seeing the note from Toni, smile as I read it. Briefly I wonder whether she's just out for awhile or whether something is bothering her and she might need me or one of the girls.
Taking my phone off its charger, I text her.
Good morning, Toni. I got your note. Everything okay?
-
*Having lain in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep or even settle into reading - which was completely unusual for her! - toni gave up as the first light of dawn appeared outside.
Tossing off the blankets she crept quietly out of bed, not wanting to wake anyone so early, and throwing on some clothes she padded downstairs to the kitchen, belle and nala at her side as usual.
Heading into the kitchen, she quietly foraged in the cupboards, grabbing fruit, cookies, and a couple of juiceboxes for herself and some biscuits and bottled water for the pups and tossing them into her backpack along with her kindle, notebooks and camera, then almost as an afterthought, grabbed a towel from the laundry room along with her lightweight raincoat, as it was still early enough in the year for the weather to be unpredictable! then heading back into the kitchen she wrote a note for nanty and stuck it on the fridge door.
Nanty,
Couldn't sleep, have gone out with the dogs down by the burn, i have my phone with me
Love
toni-jody
Quietly reading over what the note said, she figured nanty would know enough that shed be headed for her favourite spot by the burn, a place she often went to when feeling restless. Satisfied everything was in order she quietly slipped out the back door with the dogs.
Once outside, toni headed for the fence at the furthest point of the properties boundaries, enjoying the quiet of the early morning. It had been a long damp winter and opportunities for being outside fewer than toni would have liked, she never did like being cooped up inside! With all the bodies at home, finding a quiet space to herself wasn't easy - especially when you added in the fact her aunt and cousins were over regularly!
Reaching the wire fence that seperated their property from the burn, toni slipped through, holding the wires apart for the pups to slipthrough as well, and wandered a little ways along the bank to the little place she considered "hers" She had found the spot shortly after their move to Lochside, her natural curiosity and love of water naturally leading her to the burn. Of course, they had all spent time there in the summer, but for the most part only toni came here. Reaching a bend in the river, toni sped up slightly, knowing she was almost there, keen for a first glimpse.
Rounding the bend, toni stopped and smiled, everything as she remembered it. Heading for the small "cave" - little more than a shelter formed by 2 large boulders resting against the cliff face behind it - she dropped her backpack and went to sit on the bank of the burn, pulling off her socks and shoes and dipping her feet in the fridgid water as she leaned back and watched the sunrise over the trees on the opposite bank, smiling as she watched the pups play in the water.
