*Glancing round from the windowseat where i had been curled up, an open book in my lap showing the intention to be reading but in reality i had been sat simply staring out the window for the last half hour lost in my thoughts, i blink a couple times then call out for momma to come in*

*Jumps slightly as my phone goes off, having been daydreaming staring at the sky! Quickly pulling it out my pocket iglance down and see a text from mommy. Quickly i fire one back.
Morning Mommy! everythings fine i just couldnt sleep an needed to be outside! Can i go swimming?ill be carefull! Love you!

I had known that Willa was struggling a little with the changes in the family dynamic. Going from being the only child to having to share attention with three other kids full-time had to be tough. She and I had talked about it a little bit but something just tells me that she's in need of some one on one time right now.
Knocking on her door I peek in. "Willa? It's Momma. May I come in?"

When I wake up it's midmorning and I get out of bed, slightly surprised that someone hasn't come to get me. I get dressed in a pair of yoga pants and a long cotton blouse, brushing my hair lightly.
Heading downstairs I start my coffee and, seeing the note from Toni, smile as I read it. Briefly I wonder whether she's just out for awhile or whether something is bothering her and she might need me or one of the girls.
Taking my phone off its charger, I text her.
Good morning, Toni. I got your note. Everything okay?

Dear Journal,
It's been just over a year since the girls came to live with us, 9 months since we moved to Lochside. I guess ive gotten used to them being around now, and i like it here, but sometimes i wish we could go back to when it was just me and Momma. Life was definetly quieter then!
It was a Long winter and im looking forward to the summer comin in.

*Having lain in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep or even settle into reading - which was completely unusual for her! - toni gave up as the first light of dawn appeared outside.
Tossing off the blankets she crept quietly out of bed, not wanting to wake anyone so early, and throwing on some clothes she padded downstairs to the kitchen, belle and nala at her side as usual.
Heading into the kitchen, she quietly foraged in the cupboards, grabbing fruit, cookies, and a couple of juiceboxes for herself and some biscuits and bottled water for the pups and tossing them into her backpack along with her kindle, notebooks and camera, then almost as an afterthought, grabbed a towel from the laundry room along with her lightweight raincoat, as it was still early enough in the year for the weather to be unpredictable! then heading back into the kitchen she wrote a note for nanty and stuck it on the fridge door.

Couldn't sleep, have gone out with the dogs down by the burn, i have my phone with me

Quietly reading over what the note said, she figured nanty would know enough that shed be headed for her favourite spot by the burn, a place she often went to when feeling restless. Satisfied everything was in order she quietly slipped out the back door with the dogs.
Once outside, toni headed for the fence at the furthest point of the properties boundaries, enjoying the quiet of the early morning. It had been a long damp winter and opportunities for being outside fewer than toni would have liked, she never did like being cooped up inside! With all the bodies at home, finding a quiet space to herself wasn't easy - especially when you added in the fact her aunt and cousins were over regularly!
Reaching the wire fence that seperated their property from the burn, toni slipped through, holding the wires apart for the pups to slipthrough as well, and wandered a little ways along the bank to the little place she considered "hers" She had found the spot shortly after their move to Lochside, her natural curiosity and love of water naturally leading her to the burn. Of course, they had all spent time there in the summer, but for the most part only toni came here. Reaching a bend in the river, toni sped up slightly, knowing she was almost there, keen for a first glimpse.
Rounding the bend, toni stopped and smiled, everything as she remembered it. Heading for the small "cave" - little more than a shelter formed by 2 large boulders resting against the cliff face behind it - she dropped her backpack and went to sit on the bank of the burn, pulling off her socks and shoes and dipping her feet in the fridgid water as she leaned back and watched the sunrise over the trees on the opposite bank, smiling as she watched the pups play in the water.

*Curling up in my window seat i pull out my journal an sit sookin on my favourite purple pen as i stare out at the rain, thinking.*
Ok, so i knows i says this every year, but this year specially i seem to have gone deep into hibernation mode! Apart from the actual, you know, sleeping for months thing but thats only cus life dun allow for that! But thats kinda how i feel at the moment, like i "waking up" - slowly, ta be sure, cuz its warm an comfy inside in my lil nest, but i can smell the outside an its making my nose twitch (literally with the hayfever kicking in!) an im bein pulled outta my comfy snugglyness acuz im nosy an i wanna see whats goin on!
An mother natures a tease! She decides thats its gonna be sunny an warm an nice for a few days an we start thinking that maybe jus maybe summer coming an then when we start ta trust it she sticks out her tongue an goes NYAHHHHHH! fooled ya! an she sends the wind anna rain anna cold back so we wansa go back to being hibernationary gain. But heres the kicker, once you stops being hibernationary, you cants go back cuz it dun feel right no mores! So stead of being a warm snuggly sleepy bear, or a snuffly, nosy wanna-see-alla-this-new-stuff kinna bear, you left with bein a damp-cold-grumpy-snarly kinna bear!
Maybe i needs ta bes a polar bear insteads then i no care bouts the cold!

"Good morning, Toni," I return to my niece, kissing the side of her head and pulling out her decorated chair for her. "Chilly, huh? Well good thing we don't need to go out today," I remark. "Unless you want to, that is."
I smile at Willa when she brings Toni hot spiced apple juice. Laughing at what she and Kiki say about making them wait I nod in agreement. "Yes, pancakes now," I tell them.
I pass out everyone's plates:
1 pancake for Kiki, already cut with a little bit of syrup and butter
2 pancakes each for Willa and Iona, to add their own amounts of butter and syrup as they like
and
a special arrangement for Toni (though there are really only 2 on her plate).
"Okay, before we eat, let's sing happy birthday to our birthday girl!" I excitely announce while putting a purple striped party hat on top of her head.
