It has to be hard, having a birthday in the month of December. Especially for a child.
And both Toni and Kiki do.

On the morning of Toni's birthday, I get up and make a big batch of chocolate chip pancakes for everyone to have for breakfast and set the table nicely. I always let the kids sleep in until they were ready to get up on days when there wasn't school or some other reason that getting up early was needed. At the same time, though, I knew the time that Toni normally got up and had timed everything to be ready near then.

At her seat, her chair was decorated with a purple balloon tied to one of the handles and there was a birthday hat sitting at each place.

*Feeling a wet tongue on my cheek - Belles usual method of letting me know its time to get up - i screw up my face and wipe at my damp cheek as i slowly open my eyes, yawning. Not ready to be awake yet i think about pulling the covers over my head and going back to sleep when a hyperactive furball in the shape of Nala lands squarely on my middle! Shoving the dogs off the bed i grab a hairband and drag my hair back into a messy ponytail before showing my feet into my sneakers and grabbing my hoody, knowing ill get no peace till i let the pups out for their morning run.

Heading downstairs i hear movement in the kitchen and, figuring it's nanty, call through that im letting the dogs out for their run before opening the door and nearly being flattened by the pups as they rush past me. Standing in the doorway i blink a little in the bright light, shivering a little as i note that it looks like it might turn out to be a nice day for a change!*

*Opening mines eyes i hears mines tummy making noises saying dat it wants cookies! Digging rouns i fins jussa empty packet an somes crumbs sos i grabs mines nigel an crawls outs from unners mines bed an heads downastairs, smelling somethins yummy comins fromm kitchen! Stopping shorts i blinks a lil ats da balloon on da chair. Seeings mines Nanomma i goes overs to hers,
peeking ups at hers*

"Nanomma mines tummies hungries! Nigel says hims wans cookies peaseeee!"

*Waking super early and finding myself unable to go back to sleep i get up and go over to my dressing table and have a seat. Looking in the mirror i put on my glasses and study my image carefully in the glass for a time, noting the changes that have occurred since i appeared on Nantys doorstep. Reaching into my drawer i remove the traces of yesterdays make up and study the now fading purple of my hair. Nodding to myself I grab my things, pulling a box from my drawer and head to the bathroom.

Locking the bathroom door for privacy, i open the box and study the directions inside before taking a deep breath and applying the contents to my hair and let it do its thing, before showering and dressing as normal. Heading back to the bedroom, hair wrapped tight in a towel i again take a seat at my dressing table before unwinding my hair from the towel and looking at my reflection in the mirror. Running my fingers through my hair, i barely recognise the face staring back at me. Finally i smile. This is right, this is me.

Drying My hair, i smile as i run my fingers through it, marvelling at the colour i havent seen in so long. Glancing at my makeup, i make the decision to forgo the usual mask, opting instead for just a slick of gloss and instead of removing the glasses i keep them on as i should have been the whole time. Grabbing toni's card and present i bite my lip and head off downstairs to the kitchen.*

*Having been awake for a while, sat on my windowseat daydreaming, i smile as i see Belle and Nala running around the yard. Figuring as the birthday girl seems to be awake i should probably head downstairs, i grab my slippers and slip on a hoody before grabbing toni's present and heading downstairs. Doing a double take as i pass Iona heading into the kitchen i make no comment other than to say good morning and head for the kettle, checking its full before flipping it on and automatically reaching for a mug for me and momma before remembering Iona's up and grabbing a third. Placing my present for toni on a side table i smile at Momma and wish her good morning*

When Toni calls that she's letting the dogs out I grin and call back, "Okay! Straight into the kitchen for breakfast with you when you get back, please!"

Kiki comes in next and I scoop her up when she comes over, kissing her cheek. Her name for me, Nanomma, is fairly recent and I hug her close. "Well, you can have a blueberry breakfast cookie while we wait for the others," I tell her giving her one.

When Iona comes in I do a double-take, shocked. My only response is to go over to her and wrap my arms gently around her, kissing the top of her head. "Good morning, Sweetheart." I'm happy to see that I was right; letting her settle in and make her own choices avoided a lot of confrontation and ended up with her being true to herself.

Willa comes down and automatically starts the kettle and gets the mugs and I smile at her. "Good morning to you, too, Sweetheart."

*Blowing on my hands cuzz theres still a nip in the air for all thatthe suns shinin, i call to the dogs when i figure they had enough of a run ta let off steam. Ushering them in the house, i stifle a yawn, before heading towards the kitchen, stopping in the doorway, blinking,
as something shiny and pourole catches my eye.

*Smiles softly and leans back into Nantys hug as i say good morning, relieved that no-ones making a fuss over the change in look. Glancing round i look questioningly at Nanty*

"Don't tell me the birthday brats still sleeping?"

*Heading for the fridge i grab myself a glass of juice and take a seat at the table*

"Something sure smells good this morning!"

*Looking over my shoulder at Iona, still trying to get my head round the new look, having not seen her with anything but purple hair, at least since we were tiny,I answer her question as i finish making tea for everyone*

"The Birthday Brats outside with the furballs still- She must be Frozen, i had my window open earlier and its a lot colder than it looks out there!"

"You're welcome, Kiki," I answer when she thanks me, smoothing her curls and kissing the side of her head before setting her in the chair.

I'm about to answer about Toni still sleeping when Willa says she's outside with the dogs. "She'll be in soon, then," I reply easily before hearing Iona's comment that something smells good. "Thank you, Sweetheart. We'll be eating as soon as Toni gets in," I assure everyone.

Then I see Toni frozen at the door to the kitchen and chuckle a little bit. "There she is! Happy Birthday, Toni. Come and have a seat." Going over to her I put my arm around her and usher her to her place, rubbing her arm and hugging her to my side to help warm her.

"Morning Nanty! It looks nice out there but its chilllyyyy!"

*Walks over to the table and sits a mug of hot spiced apple juice in front toni to help warm her up, knowing she prefers that to tea*

"Good morning, Toni," I return to my niece, kissing the side of her head and pulling out her decorated chair for her. "Chilly, huh? Well good thing we don't need to go out today," I remark. "Unless you want to, that is."

I smile at Willa when she brings Toni hot spiced apple juice. Laughing at what she and Kiki say about making them wait I nod in agreement. "Yes, pancakes now," I tell them.

I pass out everyone's plates:

1 pancake for Kiki, already cut with a little bit of syrup and butter
2 pancakes each for Willa and Iona, to add their own amounts of butter and syrup as they like

and

a special arrangement for Toni (though there are really only 2 on her plate).

"Okay, before we eat, let's sing happy birthday to our birthday girl!" I excitely announce while putting a purple striped party hat on top of her head.
